Getting the Sheep ready for Shearing

The rain is coming down again - just enough (so far) to give the grass a bit of a drink in between the big growth spurts.  The pastures are doing real well, and we moved our lambs today to the top pasture.  The grass is up to my knees and the lambs didn't move more than 10 feet in over an hour. The guardian dogs went straight to the pond and jumped in! Golly I haven't seen Taz that clean in a long time. Taz is simply a drooly and dirty dog, so when he is clean it is a special thing! He is a very quiet and loving dog that loves to get rubbed and pet, but he is always so stinky that you need to wash your hands when you finish.

The little meat birds are growing so well and love the extra room since we expanded their pen.  They should be ready to head out to the grass yard next week and start their scratching and dusting and eating bugs. The young Hooligan #2 group will get moved in to the hen house at the end of the month, and they will get a chance to get cozy in their new home.  They should start laying in about a month, and hopefully adding to our egg count.  The Americana or "Easter Egg Chicken" will lay their different shade color eggs, and the Red Star will lay the brown egg. Most people get excited when there is a green or blue egg in the carton.  Just a little different!

Still planning on shearing the ewes sometime in the last week of March.  Our shearer will need to contact us when we get a bit closer to confirm, but we are planning on having it available for our customers to watch. It is always a process to get ready for the shearer to make it a smooth routine.  All of the ewes and lambs are out in pasture a few miles away, so we need to gather them all up and haul them in a trailer here to the house.  We can usually put about 20 to 25 full size sheep in the trailer for each load but when they have lambs we try to leave them a bit more room.  Should take us about 5 or 6 trips with the trailer to get them all home.  We will be about ready to wean the next batch of lambs, so it should be a noisy week around here.
