Spring time is always such an interesting time of the year. You plan months in advance for the new lambs to come, the lush grass and the warm sunshine that the animals will lay under. Here we are in the first week of April with snow, thunderstorms and cold temperatures.
Last week we had all of our sheep shorn. We had them all lined up and the wool was shaved off of them to make them more comfortable with the upcoming warm weather. After most of them had gone through the process, one of the ewes went off under an almond tree and gave birth to a set of twin lambs.
Yesterday we separated out the lambs that were big enough to wean from their moms and put them in a pasture with lush green grass and new tree growth. They love to munch on the tree branches and leaves when they are low enough to reach. Taz and Katy, the guardian dogs did a perimeter check on the fence to make sure it was all safe for them, then laid down with the lambs to rest and take in the new pasture.
We had plenty of help to move the ewes and lambs down the road to their new pasture. We try to take it slow, and the Border Collies’ are a great help. Dot, our female is great when the sheep start going too quickly, and she gets in front to slow them down until I can catch up. Matt rides his quad along side to keep them heading forward, and Keith drives along in the Kabota from behind to help with any lambs that may not be able to keep up. Henry was our roadside director and kept the traffic at bay until we turned off the road. Doug and Emily were everywhere to keep the ewes on track. It is an amazing picture watching all of those animals going down the pavement.
