moving to fresh pasture

It simply puts a smile on your face watching the sheep head to a fresh pasture of grass.  When I first arrive I check the perimeter of the new fence line, checking for any crosses in the wire, tree branches pulling the fence down, or simply a downed post.  The sheep will follow as far as they can go and keep an eye on my location.  They meet me on the other side and holler to let them in.

We let the guardian dogs in first to scope out the situation, making sure the interior area is safe from the bad guys.  After a few minutes, we open the fence and let the ewes and lambs run to the other side.  Most of the sheep will park themselves within the first 40 feet or so, and gorge on the fresh feed.  The younger sheep will run all over the new pasture to find the best spot.  Some headed to the top of the hill where the grass was nearly a foot tall.  What a view!

Next we move the water tubs and start to fill them with fresh water.  While my brother Eric hooks up the electrical box with solar panel, I feed the dogs.  Grayson and May are so excited about the new turf they can hardly stand still!  I have learned that the sheep that the dogs guard, are some time the predator to the dogs.  When the dogs eat, I have to stand guard of the dogs.  The sheep will invade the dogs and try to steal their food, and if I don't pay attention the food gets spilled all over.  Grayson, still being so young hasn't figured out how to protect his food from the sheep.
